I'm almost there. I've always been fascinated by that loss of 21 grams that the body has at time of death. Interesting to think it could be the soul. Funny where people used to think the soul was kept. And how about those mediums?! I was rolling in bed the other night, laughing my arse off about birthing bunnies and such. I mean, what were these women thinking? You shouldn't be shoving all that stuff up there! And then the scientists who actually fell for that stuff.
I've really enjoyed the author's writing style and her analysis. It's interesting to look at this stuff through the lens of science!

Glad to have you here Joerg! Love how international we are! And I totally think our dreams can be quite paranormal. It's a great way for our subconscious to talk to us as well!

So most of us readers should be done with the first chapter featuring Reincarnation. Thoughts? I tend to lean the way of Mary Roach. I'm skeptical of Hindus researching reincarnation or testifying to it. I do wonder about some of these American kids that we have heard about, that claim to remember things from a past life. Do I think the kids in the book are reincarnated? I would say no, off-hand. But it is hard to say when not there. I will commend Mary Roach for covering the topic in a mostly non-biased way. And I love her writing style. Sarcastic like me.

Alright, I have added all of these to the list, so we'll get to most in the future. Not crazy about the Warren's book and I've read the Amityville Horror and since it has basically been proven a fraud, I figure that is out. We'll do Katy830's for our third selection! For July we'll do Sppok: Science Tackles the Afterlife.

Bob is spot on with his analysis! I'm sure the author was disappointed with the outcome too. I don't understand what was so terrible that John would go through and destroy so much. I'm sure the Duchess never said in correspondence what killed Haddon. I'm sure John did something purposefully because he was nothing to his parents with Haddon around. Not sure he meant to kill his brother, but he was trying to hurt him I believe. As for the other stuff, it was nothing horrible. I can't imagine living in that era with arranged type marriages and such. And the John at war thing was weird too. Makes you think the privileged didn't have to fight - I mean imagine going off to play while your fellows die. I found the book both interesting and disappointing. And where the heck were all my ghosts?!

I think the marketers were pulling our legs on the haunted castle. And I'm about 3/4 through. I'm enjoying the book, although it was not what I thought it would be. I feel like I'm joining the author as we search through boxes of stuff. I would've loved unraveling the mystery.

Bob, I looked at pictures before anything else too, so I'm thinking the brother being dead has some kind of impact here. Since I don't know how he died yet, I wonder if a family member caused it. I find it really weird that his correspondence during the early part of Britain getting in the war seems to be as if he is in some far off land where nothing is going on. And with there being earlier pieces of history gone, I think you guys have a point about the mother too.

Holy cow Diane! And I thought I listened to a lot of podcasts. You have me beat. Some of those sounds really interesting just from the title. I'm going to have to check a few of these out. When you have 8 or more hours of mindless work during the day, podcasts are the answer! I told Denise if we hadn't started HGB, I probably would have done a podcast review type show because I've probably listened to hundreds at this point. Some aren't the best, but I've come to like the hosts so I continue listening. And some I let go for a while and then come back to again. Kinda depends what mood I'm in. Obviously, lately I've been on a true crime kick.

Many of you should be through the first few chapters about now and I thought it would be fun to put this question out for discussion. If you already know the answer, no spoilers!
There are several pieces of family history missing from the archives spanning three separate times in the family history. It is believed that John, the Duke, removed them. What do you think those missing pieces reveal or what is John trying to hide?

I believe it is scientifically described as something like this - there are 2 "boxes" for memories. Short term and long term. Deja Vu happens when a short term memory accidentally goes into the long term box, thus making you remember and feel like it has all happened before. Though there are some moments when it definitely feels like something much spookier is at work.... That's an interesting theory and makes sense to me.

I've made the first selection for our Book Club. I've never been part of a Book Club before, especially a virtual one. I believe the way this will go is that we take the month of May to read this book and then we'll come back here in June to comment on our thoughts. The reviews are mixed on this book, but the description was intriguing enough that I bought it. The book is: The Secret Rooms: A True Story of a Haunted Castle, a Plotting Duchess and a Family Secret by Catherine Bailey Here is the Amazon link: www.amazon.com/Secret-Rooms-Haunted-Plotting-Duchess/dp/0143124730/ref=asap_bc?ie=UTF8
